Thomas – The Pessimist

Thomas – The Pessimist

Text: John 11:16; John 10:40-42 (NKJV)

Introduction-

We are looking at Thomas the Pessimist or Doubter and a few others in the Bible that struggled with their faith.

Doubt is defined as a feeling of uncertainty or lack of conviction.  In the Bible context it is questioning one’s faith or belief in God.

Doubt (like discouragement, fear, or unbelief) is one thing the enemy likes to use to destabilize a believer.

Doubt can turn to disobedience. This is what happened to Jonah.

Some other characters in the Bible that also struggled with their faith and doubted God at one point or the other:

1. Abraham Genesis 16:2-3

2. Moses at the Red Sea Exodus 14:1-15

3. Gideon who was to lead Israel’s army against the Midianites.

4. Thomas the Pessimist. John 20:24-29

Life Lessons

1. God can do ALL things Isaiah 55:11

2. Submit yourself to God. Even when we doubt God or don’t understand His ways fully, he can still use us for His purposes.

Despite Thomas’ doubt Jesus did not condemn him but instead used it as an opportunity to strengthen Thomas’ faith.

3. Even those with strong faith, those that belong to Jesus may experience moments of doubt but can still maintain their trust in God.

4. God doesn’t need our help He only needs our cooperation as seen in the example of Jonah above.

Life applications

1. Cast down any doubts or negative thoughts 2 Cor. 10:5

2.  Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Jam. 4:8

3. Our focus must always be on Jesus

4. Change of attitude/approach and Mindset to “It can Be Done.”
