Abigail

Abigail

Text:    1 Sam. 25:10-38, Prov. 25:15, 1 Tim. 2:5-6 & Rom. 12:21

Introduction:

In 1 Samuel 25, a beautiful story emerges, one of submission and deliverance. Abigail is a lesser-known heroine in the Bible, a humble woman who was married to a wealthy scoundrel. Abigail combined her wisdom with her wealth to appear before an approaching enemy to plead for the safety of her husband’s household.

  Life Lesson

  • Abigail was intelligent, sensible and a persuasive speaker, she was able to see beyond herself. Proverb 25:15
  • One does not need a prestigious title to play a significant role. Despite the culture of the Land and her husband’s ability to place a low value on her, she made the most of her skills and opportunities to promote peace.
  • No matter how right we think we are, we must always be careful to stop and listen to others.

1 Sam. 25:23&32-33.

Life Application

  1. Get Wisdom

Wisdom is one of the ingredients we need as a believer to walk with God. Wisdom is the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment; the quality of being wise. And the book of Proverb 4:7 says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” Abigail was endowered by heavenly wisdom, a virtue woman. She was an effective counselor to both men in her life, working hard to prevent them from making rash moves. By her swift action and skillful negotiation, she kept David from taking vengeance upon Nabal. We need wisdom to handle issues in our lives.  That is while James encourages the twelve tribes of Israel that was scattered that “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5.

  1. You are more than able.

Don’t look down on yourself or allow the circumstances surrounding you or your present situation to make you bury your talent. “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; I know that full well” (Psalm 139:14). God’s character goes into the creation of every person. When you feel worthless or even begin to hate yourself, remember that God’s spirit is ready and willing to work within you. We should have as much respect for yourselves as our Maker has for us. Abigail allowed life tough situations to bring the best out of her. David was impressed with her abilities, and when Nabal died, he married her.

  1. God can speak to us through anybody.

David was in no mood to listen when he set out for Nabal’s property (25: 3, 22). Nevertheless, he stopped to hear what Abigail had to say. If he had ignored her, he would have been guilty of talking vengeance into his own hands. Also, no matter how right we think we are, we must always be careful to stop and listen to others. The extra time and effort can save us pain and trouble in the long run.

In conclusion, let us have faith in God and recognized his plan for our life.
