Text: Proverbs 23
Introduction-
Our text provides timeless wisdom and practical life lessons focused on self-control, financial stewardship, parental discipline and ethical/ moral living.
Life Lessons
- Practice Self Control and Moderation- Ecclesiastes 12:13, Proverbs 1:7 -Avoid overindulgence in food and wine (drunkenness) and do not crave the delicacies of selfish people, neither envy sinners or their riches because their riches are deceptive and fleeting, instead, fear God.
- Pursue Wisdom and Truth-Job 28:28, Psalms111:10 – Invest in obtaining truth, wisdom and understanding above all else and never sell them. Also avoid associating with stingy or wicked people as their hospitality is a trap.
- Parental Responsibility-1 Samuel 2:30-34, Proverbs 23:13-14, Proverbs 13:24-Parents are advised not to withhold discipline from children, as it will save them from destruction. The discipline we give our children will go a long way in helping them to honor elders, parents and this will bring joy to their parents’ old age.
Life applications
- Avoiding Moral Pitfalls- Proverbs 23:27-28, Romans 1:24-25- This scripture warns against adultery and sexual immorality, describing it as a dangerous trap that destroys lives.
- Discerning Relationship- 1Kings 13:11-34– This text warns against being naïve about the motives of others, especially when accepting hospitality from someone with selfish intentions.
- Guard Your Heart and Mind- Philippians 4:7, Proverbs 4:23– The application is that one should not wear themselves out trying to get rich or turning money into an idol, instead, one should focus on building character and wisdom and keeping focus on the fear of The Lord.
- Honoring Parents and Seeking Wisdom- Colossians 3:20, Ephesians 6:2-3, Exodus 20:12– This text addresses children about listening to their parents, even in adulthood and honoring them to bring them joy.
Lesson of the Day- From the scriptures, we learn that worldly indulgence, parental irresponsibility and dishonor lead to destruction, while living a life in the fear and honor of the Lord brings lasting fulfillment.
