It calls us to deal with life’s issues through virtues like silence, patience, self-control, and the grace to overlook an offense rather than ignite strife. Without any question, Proverbs 17 is a treasure trove of wisdom. Every verse of this chapter has something valuable to say to all of us as we take a deep dive into this chapter. Enjoy!

Life Lessons And Applications

1.Consequences of Wisdom and Folly. Verse 2.

Verse 2 particularly captures the sharp contrast between wisdom and folly. Both wisdom and folly are equally game-changing virtue in a believer’s life. The verse suggests to us that wisdom can elevate a believer whilst folly can demote and denigrate a believer. Examples are verses 10 and 14.

It is a helpful and sobering reminder that both wisdom and folly carry consequences that do not merely affect a moment but have the power to shape, define, and ultimately determine the entire trajectory of our lives.

2.  Loving In Speech. Verse 9

Verse 9 is a practical guide to how we can truly love as believers. What it infers is that our actions often time portrays our intentions. It is wise to choose love as the basis of our actions, especially with our words, the words we speak to ourselves and to others, about ourselves and about others. What this tells us is that our words or speeches can be a diagnostic tool of the intentions of our hearts. Our words are more than communication, they are revelation. It is possible for you to say ‘l do not mean harm’ but the words you say would diagnose the hurt your words causes. It is wisdom if we season our words with love always. Proverbs. 25:11, Isaiah. 50.4, Colossians 4;6.

Ephesians 4;15 (NKJV) encourages us to speak the truth in love.

3. Value of True Friendship. Verse 17.

Verse 17 is a classic. The writer talks about the profound value of relationships, considering the fact that we live in a world where most relationships are conditional and convenience driven. True friendship is not seasonal, rather it is consistent. This verse shines light on the kind of true friendship between David and Jonathan. 1 Samuel 18:1. (NLT). It was a true friendship borne out of true love. 1 Samuel 20:17 NLT.

Key Word of The Day: What type of a friend are you? What kind of a brother are you?
