An Attitude of Gratitude 5

Memory Verse: …  Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus – 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV).

Text: Psalms 100:1-5

Spiritual Emphasis: Gratitude refers to the ability to show thanks for the things you have and the things you’re grateful for. It helps you get closer to God by recognizing all the blessings in your life and make it easier to focus on Him. As believers, our gratitude should overflow in response to the benefits we receive as children of God. In fact, a thankful heart is a defining characteristic of a godly person since it’s an expression of His indwelling presence.

Benefits of Living a life of Gratitude

  • Receiving peace and contentment: Gratitude is presented as a powerful tool against anxiety, promoting a mindset of contentment and trust by shifting focus from what is lacking to what is present – 1 Tim. 6:6-10; Phil. 4:6-7; Prov. 3:5-6.
  • Fostering joyful perseverance: It helps believers consider trials as a means to build faith, leading to perseverance and inner joy –  James 1:2-4
  • Deepening worship and renewal: Gratitude is a direct form of worship and is essential for a life lived for God. It allows for spiritual renewal –  2 Corinthians 4:15-16
  • Strengthening faith: The practice of gratitude builds a stronger, more rooted faith, in the Lord –  Colossians 2:6-7
  • Gratitude Glorifies God: This alone would be reason to give thanks to God. Our gratitude glorifies God as we exalt not the gifts, but the Giver. Gratitude helps us realize all we have comes not because of us, but from God – 2 Cor. 4:15.
