Memory Verse: … “Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore, get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding... Proverbs 4:7 (NKJV).
Text: Proverbs 3:19-26.
Spiritual Emphasis: The subject of wisdom is a theme that is woven throughout the fabric of the Scripture. Wisdom is found from the pages of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and everywhere in between. Wisdom is essential to God, and the Bible tells us wisdom is the principal thing, and we should get wisdom. Wisdom is not merely knowledge or intelligence, but the ability to discern God’s will and apply it to life, characterized by fear of the Lord, humility, and righteous living. In this series, we will look at wisdom, and how to get godly wisdom.
Growing In Godly Wisdom
- Ask God: We serve a good Father that gives good gifts to us. He is faithful to His word and if you “ask in faith,” James says, “without doubting” you will receive! This is a prayer God will always say “yes” to! How amazing and comforting is that? – James 1:5-8; 1 King 3:7-14; Matthew 21:22; Heb. 11:6.
- Position yourself around wise people: Take a look at people you surround yourself with, your friends and companions – are they filled with a desire to live a wise and godly life? Or do you find yourself constantly in situations where you are “guilty by association”? If this is the case, then you will want to thoughtfully reevaluate who you are spending time with, and intentionally position yourself around those who you know will make you better – Prov. 13:14-25; Col. 3:23; Prov. 26:11; Prov. 28:26.
- Actively obey and apply God’s Word: While actively reading and meditating on stories and parables in the Bible is greatly beneficial, but better still as a follower of Christ, we are all called to put the Word into action – James 1:22; Isaiah 1:19; Jos. 1:8.
Question(s): As followers of Christ, how do we begin to fully apply 1 Samuel 15:22 to every area of our lives? (“obedience is better than sacrifice”)
Conclusion:
Wisdom is a choice, one that begins with the decision to trust Christ as Savior and increases as we follow the teachings of God’s Word. If we want to be wise, we must have a passion for the Lord’s guidance because there are many ideas, people, and situations that will tempt us to ignore scriptural principles.
Shalom!
