Parable of The Friend Seeking Bread

Parable of The Friend Seeking Bread

Day: 29

Text: Luke 11: 5-8  (NLT)

Introduction

In the Parable of the Friend Seeking Bread Jesus tells his disciples the story of a man who goes to ask for bread from a friend very late at night. The friend responds that because he and his family have already settled in for the night, that he can’t give him anything.  The Reluctant Friend eventually ends up giving the man the bread, but not for the right reasons. This parable illustrates the all-loving, ever-merciful, and deeply caring nature of our Lord and Father. As we dissect this passage, we’ll learn a bit more about how and why we should pray, why persistence in prayer is important, and how we can apply these lessons to our everyday lives!

Life Lessons

  1. God Is Our Perfect, All Loving Father – God is NOT like the Reluctant Friend in this parable, but rather is perfect and loving, so we should be eager to come to him in prayer. Luke 11:8*, Luke 11:11-13, Matthew 6:26,  Lamentations 3:22-23
  2. God Wants You To Be Persistent – Asking over and over for something can make us feel like we are pestering at times, but The Lord wants us to keep coming to him for everything that we need in life. Luke 11:9-10 (AMP), Deuteronomy 32:6, Genesis 32:22-28
  3. Prayer Is About Building Relationship With The Father – This passage can make it seem like prayer is about making a laundry list of things to ask from God. It is more than that; it is a conversation with our Heavenly Father. When we speak to God, it is important to keep in mind that he speaks back. James 4:8, Matthew 6:6, Jeremiah 33:3, Romans 12:2

Life Applications

  1. God Already Knows Our Needs and Desires; Ask AnywayMatthew 6:8, Jeremiah 1:5,Luke 12:29-31
  2. Be Persistent In Your Prayers1 Thessalonians 5:17, Galatians 6:9, Psalm 86:11
  3. We Have To Be Bold In Our FaithPsalm 103:13, Luke 11: 1-5, Hebrews 4:16

Lesson of the Day

Prayer is a vital part of every Christian’s life. It is a privilege granted to us; an opportunity to communicate and draw closer to God. We may face moments where we feel alone or unheard, but Jesus gives us reassurance in the Parable of the Friend Seeking Bread. Unlike man who can be fickle, God’s love is steadfast and he is always there for us. While even your best friends could one day betray or disappoint you, God tells us that we can call out to him, as many times as we want and he will never fail us. We should boldly and respectfully approach the seat of the Most High in all that we need, and he will surely bless us.
