The Second Coming of Christ: Purpose and Nature

Memory Verse: “Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” Mathew 24:44 – (NKJV).

Text: 2 Peter 3 1-18.

Spiritual Emphasis: Brethren, the Lord isn’t really being slow about His promise, as some think. He is being patient for our sake. He does not want anyone destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. So, be ready for no one know the day of the Lord except our heavenly Father.

  1. Purpose of Jesus Second Coming
  • Jesus will return in order to fulfill scriptural prophecies, scriptural promises and the practical teachings of Jesus –  Titus.1:2, John.14:1-3. 
  • Jesus will return in order to render judgment on the earth. It will be the beginning of the end of evil, corruption and satanic influences. Jesus will be vindicated as a judge –  2 Tim.4:1, Heb.9:28.
  • Jesus will return to begin the restoration of the original plan and program of God again for Israel, for the Church and for humanity –  Rev.21:1-4.
  • Jesus will return to complete and fulfill the hope of believers in God and Christ – 2 Thess.1:10.

Question: What comes to your mind when you hear or read about the second coming of Jesus Christ? Use it to encourage the class.

  1. How Will Jesus Come The Second Time 
  • Jesus will return primarily as a king –  Rev.19:15-16.
  • Jesus will return as the judge –  2 Cor.5:10, Rev.20:11-12.
  • Jesus will also return as the ultimate restorer and refiner –  Mal.3:1-3
  • Jesus will return as a rewarder of deeds and actions of every human being – Col.3:23-25

Question: In your opinion what is the best way a Christian should be prepared for the second coming of Jesus? Encourage the class. 

Conclusion 

The return of Jesus is a fact and it will happen just like Jesus first coming. However, this should not make you stop what you are doing to wait for the Lord’s return. Rather, let it prompt you to holiness as you direct your heart towards Christ, whose coming we all wait for with hope and joy
