Introduction:

What does Jesus say about living a Purposeful Life? Before we look at what Jesus says about living a purposeful life, let’s analyze what the world says a purposeful life is. The narrative of a good life, albeit one that has purpose in the world, is to go to school, get a good paying job, make money, get married, have children, and make sure those children hit the aforementioned goals.

Purpose as defined by Oxford Languages is

“The reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.”

In the Kingdom of God: Our purpose is our reason for existence. The reason we exist is to display the glory of God through our lives, our works, our worship, and our being.

Life lessons on what Jesus says about Living a Purposeful Life.

LIFE LESSONS

  1. Keep the Main thing, the Main Thing!

In our pursuit of goals and education, health, fitness, marriage, and success we can forget what Jesus told Martha: “And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42.

What did Mary find? Mary found Jesus, she found the purpose for her life! She found the reason that she was born to worship and serve the Lord. Martha was doing great stuff, even helpful things but Mary was living out her purpose, which is why she was fulfilled and not flustered trying to impress Jesus. Jesus doesn’t need us to impress Him, he wants us to abide with Him to flow with Him. To honor Him.

  1. Keep Fishing: Jesus said “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” Matthew 4:19. Jesus used their understanding of their occupations to show them their primary occupation to bring souls into the Kingdom. So many of us prioritize our work over Kingdom work and don’t understand that God has called us to whatever sphere of influence to be a change agent in that space: “a fisher of man”. Whatever occupation or pastime God has enabled you to do, let’s make sure that we are shining the light of Christ and showing someone the way to Jesus through our actions.
  2. Your works show your faith: If you want to live purposeful life you must inspect your works. Are your works lining up with the life that you claim to live? Are you honoring God with your life, body, money, resources, and time? Our lives are not our own… Ephesians 2:8-10 says: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”  God has created us to work in His vineyard doing good works.

LIFE APPLICATIONS

  1. Make everything you do Worship to God: So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31. No matter your occupation, marital status, health status, or social status, your life has purpose, and that purpose is to glorify God by living in His abundant life.
  2. Let God occupy the mundane aspects of life: As you are reading, driving, working, going to the grocery store let God show you how to shine your light so that all men may glorify your Father in Heaven.

Matthew 5:13-16 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

  1. Be an Ambassador of Christ: Don’t say I am not a Pastor therefore I can’t preach, let your life amplify Jesus. In your occupation be kind, courteous to your colleagues, be diligent with the work God has given you in your spheres of influence. Raise your child with the reverence of the Father, love your wife as Christ loves the Church. These are ways to live on purpose with purpose!

LESSON OF THE DAY

God has already given us a purpose when He died on the cross for our sins, our job as believers is to take the life He has given us and to live out the good works He has predestined us to do.
