Text: Proverbs 19
Introduction-
God gives us wisdom for every area of our lives, which when applied properly will set us on the right path. Proverbs 19 provides a clear application of wisdom for godliness, relationships, wealth and character.
Life Lessons–
Wisdom for raising a godly family: Family is the bedrock of society, great families make a great nation, it is important we continue to hold on to the instructions of the creator of family for the preservation of society. Discipline must be the foundation of every family, that is the way the family is shaped v18, discipline is not as a result of hate or being opposed to freedom as some think it is, instead it helps bring structure, build morals and legacy. When there is no discipline in a family, it leads to shame and foolishness v13. Compassion should be taught in every family, compassion amongst siblings and parents. Compassionate families raise compassionate leaders.
Following Wisdom leads to wealth: There is a common thought that hard work alone is what leads to wealth, this is not true because some of the most hardworking people are very poor. Honesty is quality that is slowing dying in world v1, people use dishonesty for quick gains which does not last and leads to shame Proverbs 21:6. The Bible teaches us that a good name is better than silver or gold Proverbs 22:1, when you are honest, you will have a name that will open doors and provides silver and gold. For us to be wealthy, we must hate laziness- in our minds and in our hands v15. Helping the poor, is another key to wealth don’t be selfish don’t think about yourself alone. Loyalty leads to wealth v22 there is a misconception that loyalty is weakness and it does not pay. Loyalty is strength and not weakness, it will be rewarded, sometimes not by the person you are loyal to, but by God, He will reward you in due time. Ruth 1:16- Ruth was loyal to Naomi even when Naomi had nothing to offer her, but God repaid her loyalty by positioning her in the lineage of David & Jesus Christ.
Life Applications
Right decision protects us from mistakes: some mistakes are too costly and cannot be recovered from, God’s Word when we apply it right will error proof us.
- We elongate our lives by controlling our emotions: rage, temper, anger has ended people glorious lives, ministries, marriages v11, 19. When we learn how to control our emotions, we will be honored
- Seek knowledge before doing anything (v 2-3): Before doing anything seek thorough wisdom, God has equipped us with wisdom through His Word, His Spirit and His servants. V8 People don’t seek God’s wisdom; they act and start blaming God for everything that went wrong. V20,27 Get advice and instructions, it will safeguard you because in multitude of counsel there is safety.
- Fear of God leads to wisdom: we must always acknowledge that it is God who gives wisdom and for us to succeed we must submit our plans before God and trust Him to direct us. V21,23
