Two Ways to Live

Two Ways to Live

Day: 13

Text: Proverbs 13

Introduction-

This chapter offers vital nuggets for a happy life. It touches on almost every aspect of life. It focuses on the importance of diligence, integrity, patience, the creation and preservation of generational wealth, faithfulness, self-control, and the bridling of our tongue. It also emphasizes avoiding instant gratification and highlights the dangers and consequences of acting contrary to God’s ways and counsel.

Applications:

A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not respond to rebukes (Proverbs 13:1)

  • Instructions allow us to “look before we leap.” They help us avoid the mistakes our parents made. They are a gift of love. “They can help shorten the journey of a 1000 miles.”
  • A child who does not listen to instructions is foolish.
  • Instruction provides clear direction and a safe path in life. It offers an opportunity for perfection and understanding
  • Proverbs 4:1 – “Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding.”
  • It shows where the mines are and how to avoid them. It is the traveler’s map. Rebukes may be tough and critical, but they should be received as constructive criticism. A mocker isolates himself, limiting his opportunities for success and advancement.

Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin” Proverbs 13:3

  • Longevity is tied to how we guard our lips. Careless talk will bring about sudden destruction
  •  “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” – Proverbs 18:21
  • Our tongue shapes our future.
  • Listen more and talk less
  • A soft answer can heal wounds (Proverbs 15:1), console a hurting soul, and turn away wrath.
  • The way we talk reveals who we are.

Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them. Proverbs 13:24

  • Train your children in the way of the lord (Proverbs 22:6 – Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he’s old, he will not depart from it.”)
  • There should be consequences for bad behavior
  • A well-trained child is a source of pride for their parents and a benefit for the world
  • Discipline is not hatred

Lessons:

Avoid a get-rich-quick mentality: Dishonest money dwindles, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow (Proverbs 13:11).

Be mindful of the impacts your words may have on others (Words kill and make alive). Be a careful talker. Proverbs 13:3

Be mindful of the company you keep.

  • “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.” (Proverbs 13:30)
  •  Do not forsake the assembly of the righteous
  •  Your friends and relationships will influence and shape you. Choose carefully.

Key word:
“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”
