Text: 1 Timothy 4:7-8.

Why we struggle with spiritual discipline

  • Weakness of the flesh: Makes consistent prayer and focus difficult – Matt. 26:41; 1 Thess 5:22.
  • War within: Conflict between the flesh and the Spirit, often leading to laziness or disinterest in pursuing God through Bible study or prayer – Gal. 5:17.
  • Lack of spiritual knowledge: Lack of understanding regarding the necessity and benefits of spiritual growth – Hosea 4:6.
  • Miss-placed priorities:  The heart often prioritizes rest, entertainment, or work over seeking God – Matt. 6:33.
  • Fear and pride: Fear of legalism or pride in thinking one can handle life without daily reliance on God can hinder discipline – Isaiah 41:13-14; Prov. 16:18; James 4:6; Prov. 3:5-6.

How to overcome struggling with spiritual discipline

  • Rely on the Holy Spirit – John 14: 15-16; Gal 5:22-23
  • Study the Word of God to help build discernment – Jos. 1:8-9
  • Seek Accountability and Mentorship – 2 Tim. 3:16

Questions:   Besides these 3 ways to overcome spiritual discipline, what other ways supported by scriptures can you think of?

Conclusion: Many people struggle with spiritual disciplines because they aren’t asking the Holy Spirit for help. Instead of going it alone, tap into the Holy Spirit’s power. He makes spiritual disciplines easier for us so we can stay committed to them. Spiritual disciplines are essential to Christian growth and maturity.

Shalom!
