Why we become exposed to deception 

Memory Verse: “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free – John 8:32 (NIV)

Spiritual Emphasis: People become exposed to deception for various reasons, primarily due to lack of grounding in biblical truth, unrighteous desires, pride, self-deception, and it is a tool of the devil (John 8:44). Be grounded in the Word of God, and you shall truly be free.

Text: 2 Peter 2:1-22

Reasons for Deception

• Lack of Love for the Truth: Refusing to love God’s word makes us susceptible to lies – 2 Thess. 2:10-12; 2 Tim. 4:3-4.
• An Undiscerning Heart: Relying on emotions rather than Scriptures, and lacking spiritual discernment, hinders the ability to distinguish truth from falsehood – Prov. 14:15; Jer. 17:9; 1 John 4:1.
• Pride and Self-Deception: Pride leads to a false sense of security against temptation, and self-deception involves thinking more highly of oneself than we ought to – Gal. 6:3; 1 Cor. 10:12.
• Following Desires and Appetites: Deceivers exploit personal desires and lust with flattery to lead people away from sound doctrine – Rom. 16:18; James 1:14-15.
• Accepting Signs and Wonders over Scriptures: Relying on supernatural displays rather than God’s Word makes one vulnerable to false prophets – Matt. 24:24; 2 Cor. 11:14.
• Isolation from the Believing Community: Being isolated from the church removes support and accountability, making one an easier target for deception – Heb. 10:25; Ps. 122:1; Prov. 27:17.

Questions:   What do you think Jesus meant when He said in Matthew 24:22 -“if those days were not shortened, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the elect, those days will be shortened”

Conclusion: Brethren, we should be vigilant, grounded in God’s Word, and seek discernment through the Holy Spirit. The path to overcoming deception is found in Jesus Christ, the truth.
