Memory Verse:  “In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”

Spiritual Emphasis: One of the most important attitude of a true disciple of Jesus is humility. Humility is a vital expression of being a follower of Jesus Christ, both towards God and towards other people. Humility is a key characteristic of been a disciple and that following Christ’s
example and lifestyle also means serving others with a humble heart and disposition.

Text: Philippians 2: 3-11.

Attributes of A Disciplined Disciple

• Humility means valuing others above self: A disciplined disciple will be willing to prefer other people’s welfare and well being before self. Jesus showed this example when He knelt down and washed His disciples feet and enjoined them replicate His example to other people. John 13;2-17, Rom. 12;10.
• Humility also involves submitting to the will of God: A disciplined disciple is not only consciously aware of the role the will of God plays in his or her life, but will always be willing to yield to God’s will, bearing in mind that God’s plans is always best. Luke. 22:42, John 4:33-34, Psa.143:10.
• Humility is an expression of reliance on God: A disciplined disciple knows he or she has to admit mistakes and errors when they are committed. A disciple should be quick to acknowledge wrong doings, apologize for the wrong doing and be open to correction from both God and other people. James 4:7, Matt.23;11-12.

Question: In what practical ways can Christians demonstrate humility without losing their self worth?

Conclusion

According to CS Lewis “humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less”.Being a humble disciple does not infer that you are devaluing yourself of diminishing your self worth, Jesus never did, on the contrary it’s about shifting your focus away from yourself and
prioritizing others. Humility is truly a noble virtue every Christian must possess. The reward from God to the disciple with a humble heart and disposition is of great worth
